The original purpose of the plant was to test, on a pilot basis, various methods for the manufacture of rare metal products, in collaboration with the State Rare Metal Industry Institute ("Giredmet", Moscow).
The plant laid the foundation of the rare metal industry in the USSR. The technologies and methods developed by the plant were used by a number of companies specialized in the manufacture of rare-earth products, rare metals and compounds of their basis.
In 1994 the plant became a joint-stock company.
At present, the company has a private form of ownership.
